How to get the right part first time
- Find the make and model number, usually on a plate on the back or underside of the machine.
- For needles, check the needle system in the manual or on the old needle packet (for example 130/705H for most domestic machines).
- For bobbins, compare against the old one, or take it with you. Similar-looking bobbins are not interchangeable.
- For feet, check whether your machine is low shank, high shank or slant shank, or uses snap-on feet.
- If in doubt, take the machine or part to a specialist.

Genuine vs compatible parts
Compatible parts can be good value for consumables like bobbins and feet, but for timing-critical parts such as hooks and loopers, quality matters. Poorly made hooks can cause skipped stitches and damage.
Parts for vintage machines
Older Singer, Jones, Frister & Rossmann and similar machines are still repairable. Common replacements are belts, bobbin winder tyres, motor brushes, light bulbs and feet. Some mechanical parts are now sourced second-hand or as reproductions, which is where a dealer’s trade contacts help.
Keep a small spares kit
- A pack of needles in your two most-used sizes, plus ballpoint.
- Spare bobbins (the correct class).
- Small screwdriver and lint brush.
- Spare light bulb or LED for older machines.
