When hiring makes sense
- A single project such as costumes, curtains or a wedding outfit.
- Trying a machine type, such as an overlocker or industrial machine, before you buy.
- A short production run or a seasonal peak in a workroom.
- Events, workshops and classes.
What to check before you hire
- Total cost: hire rate, deposit, delivery and collection.
- Condition: has the machine been serviced and tested? Is it supplied with needles, bobbins and a manual?
- Electrical safety: the hire company should check its equipment is safe to use.
- Damage and insurance: who pays if it breaks?
- Support: is there someone to call if something goes wrong?
Hire vs buying used
For anything longer than a few months, a serviced used machine can work out cheaper than hire, and you can often sell or part-exchange it later. Read hire vs buy. In Leicester, PK Sewing Machines sells tested used domestic and industrial machines and offers part exchange, and can arrange collection and delivery. Ask them directly about short-term options.
Hire for events, classes and costume
Schools, community groups, theatres and costume departments often need several machines for a short time. Ask for a group rate, delivery and collection, and a quick briefing for users. Simple mechanical machines are easiest for groups.
Look after a hired machine
- Use the needles and thread supplied, or ask before changing.
- Don’t oil it unless told to.
- Report faults straight away rather than forcing it.
- Return it clean, with all feet and accessories.
