Selling or part-exchanging a sewing machine

Your old machine may be worth more than you think. Here is how to get a fair price, or put its value towards an upgrade.

What affects value

  • Make, model and age.
  • Working condition and service history.
  • Accessories: feet, bobbin case, manual, table and motor for industrials.
  • Demand: some industrial and specialist machines are always sought after.

Selling privately

Online marketplaces can get a higher price, but you handle photos, questions, viewings and delivery. Be honest about faults and offer a demonstration.

Selling to or part-exchanging with a dealer

A dealer will usually offer less than a private buyer because they test, service and resell the machine, but it is quick and simple, and part exchange reduces the cost of your next machine.

Prepare your machine

  • Clean it and gather the manual, feet, bobbins and pedal.
  • Note the make, model and serial number.
  • Take clear photos and sew a sample of its stitches.
  • Be upfront about any faults.

Where to sell

  • Dealers and specialists: quickest, with part-exchange options.
  • Online marketplaces: wider audience, more work.
  • Local groups and sewing clubs: good for vintage and specialist machines.

Donating a machine

If your machine is working but of low resale value, community projects, schools and charities may welcome it. Ask whether they can accept it and whether it needs a safety check first.

Pricing your machine

Look at completed sales of the same model, not asking prices, to see what machines actually sell for. Adjust for condition, accessories and service history. Be realistic about common models; rare and sought-after machines can command more.

Safe selling

  • Meet buyers in a safe place or have someone with you.
  • Use secure payment methods and wait for funds to clear.
  • Pack carefully if posting: support the needle bar and remove the bobbin.

Clearing a workroom

If you are closing or downsizing a production room, a specialist can assess several machines at once. PK Sewing Machines in Leicester buys selected machines outright and offers part exchange against replacement machines. Many of Leicester’s old hosiery workrooms have passed their machines on this way. See our deals page.
